Lake Vermilion–Soudan Underground Mine State Park is a unique northern Minnesota park that blends rugged North Woods scenery with deep industrial history. Set along the shores of Lake Vermilion near Tower, the park offers a rare combination of lakeside recreation, forested trails, and preserved mining heritage.
The park’s landscape features rocky outcrops, dense boreal forest, wetlands, and expansive views of Lake Vermilion’s interconnected bays. Glacially shaped bedrock and iron-rich formations define the terrain, while surrounding waters and forest create a distinctly northern, remote-feeling environment.
Trails wind through forested areas and along former mining lands, offering moderate hikes that highlight both natural scenery and historic features. Routes provide lake views, quiet woodland sections, and interpretive opportunities that connect the landscape to the area’s mining past.
Recreation at the park includes hiking, boating, fishing, paddling, and camping, with Lake Vermilion serving as a major draw for water-based activities. The park also offers access to guided underground mine tours, adding a distinctive educational experience not found in other state parks. Winter brings snowshoeing and cross-country skiing across the frozen landscape.
The park preserves the historic Soudan Underground Mine, Minnesota’s first iron ore mine and one of the deepest underground mines in the world. Its protection reflects the state’s effort to honor the region’s mining legacy while transitioning the land to conservation, education, and recreation.
By combining expansive lake scenery, quiet northern forests, and a remarkable industrial past, Lake Vermilion–Soudan Underground Mine State Park offers an experience unlike any other in Minnesota. Whether exploring the shoreline, hiking wooded trails, or descending into the mine, visitors encounter a powerful connection between natural landscapes and human history.
