Clouds over landscape and sky

Overview

Overview

Sprawling across the former site of a military airbase in southeastern Wisconsin, Richard Bong State Recreation Area offers a wide-open landscape unlike any other in the state park system. Located near the Illinois border, the park is defined by expansive grasslands, long sightlines, and a strong sense of space—making it a favorite for quiet exploration, outdoor sports, and prairie restoration.

Landscape & Geology

Landscape

The recreation area occupies thousands of acres of gently rolling terrain where runways and infrastructure once stood. Over time, much of the land has been reclaimed by prairie grasses, wetlands, and open fields, creating a landscape characterized by broad horizons and unobstructed views.

Scattered woodlots, ponds, and restored grasslands provide habitat for birds, small mammals, and pollinators. The openness of the terrain gives the park a distinctly different feel from Wisconsin’s forested parks, emphasizing sky, wind, and seasonal change.

Trails & Scenic Views

Trails

Trails at Richard Bong State Recreation Area are generally flat and wide, well suited for hiking, biking, and long-distance walks. Many routes follow former airfield paths or trace the edges of restored prairie and wetlands, offering uninterrupted travel through open country.

The lack of elevation and tree cover makes the park especially appealing for visitors seeking accessible terrain, though weather conditions such as wind and sun exposure can strongly shape the experience.

Recreation

Recreation

Recreation opportunities are broad and flexible, reflecting the park’s open design. Hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, model airplane flying, dog training, and horseback riding are all popular activities, supported by the park’s ample space and minimal congestion.

Hunting is permitted in designated areas during specific seasons, and fishing opportunities are available in select ponds. The park’s size allows multiple activities to coexist without crowding, making it a versatile destination for a wide range of outdoor interests.

History

History

Richard Bong State Recreation Area is named in honor of Major Richard Ira Bong, a World War II fighter pilot from Wisconsin and the highest-scoring ace in U.S. history. The land was originally developed as Bong Air Force Base, though it never became fully operational.

Following the base’s closure, the property was repurposed for public recreation and conservation. Today, the park reflects a transformation from military infrastructure to restored open space, balancing historical legacy with modern outdoor use.
