Overview

Overview

Located at the dramatic confluence of the Mississippi and Trempealeau Rivers, Perrot State Park offers some of the most varied scenery in western Wisconsin. Near the city of Trempealeau, the park blends towering river bluffs, quiet wetlands, and broad floodplain views into a landscape shaped by water, wind, and time.

Landscape & Geology

Landscape

Perrot State Park’s landscape is defined by steep sandstone and limestone bluffs that rise sharply above the Mississippi River Valley. From high overlooks, visitors can see winding river channels, forested islands, and distant ridgelines stretching across the Upper Midwest.

Below the bluffs, the terrain transitions into marshes, bottomland forest, and backwater sloughs that support a rich diversity of plant and animal life. The contrast between high elevations and low, water-shaped environments gives the park an unusually wide range of ecosystems within a compact area.

Trails & Scenic Views

Trails

A well-developed trail system allows visitors to explore both the bluff tops and the lowland areas of Perrot State Park. Trails range from easy riverside walks to challenging climbs that ascend steep slopes and stone stairways.

Several routes lead to scenic overlooks with sweeping views of the Mississippi River and surrounding valley, particularly striking during fall color season. Trail conditions can vary, and sturdy footwear is recommended for steeper sections.

Recreation

Recreation

Recreation at Perrot State Park includes hiking, wildlife viewing, paddling, and fishing. The park’s wetlands and river edges attract a wide variety of birds, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers, especially during spring and fall migration.

Canoeing and kayaking opportunities are available in calmer backwaters, while anglers fish for species common to the Mississippi River system. Camping is available at a wooded campground, providing a peaceful base for exploring the park and nearby river communities.

History

History

The park is named for French explorer Nicolas Perrot, who traveled the Mississippi River region in the seventeenth century. The rivers that meet here have long served as important transportation routes for Indigenous peoples, traders, and settlers.

Established to preserve scenic bluffs and ecologically important wetlands, Perrot State Park reflects Wisconsin’s commitment to protecting the natural and cultural heritage of the Mississippi River corridor.
