The park’s landscape is shaped by the Black River as it descends rapidly through a rocky corridor toward Lake Superior. Big Manitou Falls, plunging more than 160 feet, is the park’s signature feature and one of the most impressive natural sights in the state. Nearby Little Manitou Falls provides a second, more intimate waterfall experience.

Surrounding the river are dense northern forests dominated by pine, birch, maple, and spruce. Steep ravines, rocky outcrops, and shaded riverbanks create a cool, rugged environment that contrasts with the more gentle terrain found elsewhere in Wisconsin.

History

Pattison State Park is named in honor of Martin Pattison, an early conservation advocate who played a key role in protecting the Black River and its waterfalls for public enjoyment. Recognition of the area’s scenic and ecological importance led to its preservation as a state park.

Today, park management focuses on balancing visitor access with protection of sensitive river and gorge environments, ensuring that the waterfalls remain a defining feature for future generations.
