Overview

Overview

Fayette Historic State Park preserves a restored 19th-century industrial town along the shores of Big Bay de Noc in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Once a bustling iron-smelting community, the site is now a unique blend of history and lakeshore scenery. Visitors experience both a preserved company town and the natural beauty of Lake Michigan’s northern waters.

Landscape & Geology

Landscape

The park sits on a sheltered harbor bordered by limestone bluffs and forested hills. The calm waters of Big Bay de Noc create a protected inlet, contrasting with the rugged rock formations that rise behind the historic townsite. Open shoreline, wooded trails, and dramatic cliff views give the park both scenic and geologic interest.

Trails & Scenic Views

Trails

Fayette Historic State Park offers several trails that wind through the surrounding forest and along the limestone bluffs overlooking the bay. These paths provide elevated views of the harbor and historic buildings below, as well as opportunities for wildlife viewing and quiet exploration beyond the restored townsite.

Recreation

Recreation

In addition to touring the preserved buildings, visitors enjoy camping, boating, kayaking, fishing, and swimming. The protected harbor makes paddling especially popular, while the campground offers sites suitable for tents and RVs. Photography and sightseeing are common activities, particularly at sunrise and sunset when the harbor reflects changing light.

History

History

Founded in the 1860s as an iron-smelting operation, Fayette quickly developed into a company town complete with furnaces, worker housing, and support buildings. When the iron market declined in the late 19th century, the town was eventually abandoned. Today, the preserved structures provide insight into industrial life in the Upper Peninsula and stand as one of the Midwest’s most intact historic company towns.
