History

From Military Training Site to State Park

The land that now forms Cheboygan State Park was once used as a military training area during World War II. After the war, the property was transferred to the state of Michigan and eventually developed into a public recreation area.

Today the park preserves a portion of Michigan’s Lake Huron shoreline while providing opportunities for outdoor recreation. Its transformation from military training grounds to protected parkland reflects Michigan’s long tradition of conserving natural landscapes for public enjoyment.
