State Park • IN

Prophetstown State Park is a modern prairie and cultural heritage park located near Lafayette, Indiana, at the confluence of the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers. Known for its restored tallgrass prairie and living history experiences, the park blends natural landscapes with interpretive programming that highlights Native American and early settler history. Wide-open skies, native grasses, and thoughtfully designed facilities make Prophetstown a unique destination in Indiana’s park system.
The park’s defining feature is its expansive tallgrass prairie restoration, one of the largest in Indiana. Rolling fields of native grasses and wildflowers stretch across the landscape, changing dramatically with the seasons. Wooded areas and river corridors provide contrast to the open prairie, while restored wetlands attract birds and other wildlife. The flat terrain offers sweeping views that feel distinct from Indiana’s more forested parks.
Prophetstown offers several miles of multi-use trails for hiking and biking that wind through prairie and along wooded sections of the park. The relatively flat trails make the park especially accessible for casual walkers and families. Interpretive signage along the routes helps visitors understand prairie ecology, restoration efforts, and the historical significance of the region.
In addition to hiking and biking, visitors can explore The Farm at Prophetstown, a living history farm that recreates 1920s agricultural life with heritage livestock and historic structures. A modern campground provides electric sites and amenities for overnight stays. Picnic areas and open green spaces offer room to relax, while seasonal programming and educational events add another layer to the park’s recreational experience.
The park takes its name from Prophet’s Town, a Native American settlement established by Tenskwatawa, the Shawnee Prophet, and his brother Tecumseh in the early 1800s. The original settlement stood near this site before the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. Today, the park honors that heritage through interpretation and educational exhibits while preserving the surrounding natural landscape.
Walk through tallgrass prairie, explore Indiana’s cultural roots, and experience open landscapes unlike any other state park in the region. Prophetstown State Park offers a thoughtful blend of nature, history, and hands-on learning near the banks of the Wabash River.
